Not much is known about Yuri prior to the accident that took her family's lives, but the Yuri that came out of the wreckage was clearly changed by the trauma. The ability to see "impossible" things created a scar on her personality that even at the end of the game she has difficulty overcoming. Her experience left her shaken and feeling isolated, unable to reach out for help-- when she did, she got told she was merely 'sick' and the doctors attempted to help her, to no avail. Yuri holds a sense of bitterness for this, as indicated by her commentary when finding one of her notebooks, where she remarks the doctors said it would help to write everything down, but she concludes that they never cared about her anyway, as no one ever bothered to read what she wrote.

Because of these incidents, Yuri grew to see herself as someone apart from everyone else. She didn't, and still doesn't quite, know how to connect with people. How could she when she could see and hear all these horrible things that no one else could? She was lonely and growing worse as spirits swarmed her, trying to get her attention. Growing more and more depressed, Yuri became obsessed with death and the idea that she and everyone else would eventually die alone; this led to her trying to commit suicide until Hisoka caught her at the last moment and pleaded with her to keep living a little while longer.

Despite this, Yuri isn't quite suicidal-- she's obsessed with death still and the idea of dying alone, but she promised Hisoka that she would live for "a little while," and plans to hold onto that promise. This shows how much Yuri values keeping promises and the loyalty and admiration she has for Hisoka. It shows up again when Hisoka disappears and Yuri works tirelessly to try and get her back. Yuri is very loyal to those who manage to claim it and will do everything in her power to help her friends. Death calls to her, and she feels the pull of it often, but she isn't one to throw her life away needlessly. She tries to commit suicide under the pull of it twice throughout the series-- once in a flashback showing when she's about to jump off the cliff, and again when she tries to wade into the Black Lake to drown herself (and again in the "Bad End" when she jumps from the cliff with Ouse).

She's also incapable of not helping someone in need. Despite her reservations, she still opens up the shop when Hisoka's gone, despite never actually serving customers before and feeling uncomfortable at the prospect. When Fuyuhi comes by looking for Hisoka, Yuri is at first content to simply wait for Hisoka to (hopefully) return after she goes missing, but Fuyuhi's insistence that she go on her own to find her missing friend spurs Yuri to action. She can't let Fuyuhi go onto the mountain alone, not with how dangerous it is, so she bravely picks up and goes after her, using her powers to help.

While still uncomfortable with dealing with people and her powers out of the fear of accidentally seeing into peoples' souls, Yuri does her best and will use her powers as needed. While she doesn't normally talk about them, Hisoka openly advertises her powers to find lost people and items, and Yuri gradually begins to adopt a similar attitude, getting over her reluctance to use her power when it comes to helping others.

When it comes to people who've been through traumas, whether similar or different than her own, Yuri is quick to offer comfort no matter how awkward she feels attempting. She doesn't have Hisoka's easy grace or showmanship, but she tries her best. She comforts Haruka after finding her on the mountain and offers her a place to sleep, determined to keep a watchful eye over the girl and help her. When she saves Hisoka, she recreates the scene of when Hisoka saved her, giving her coffee (presumably the first cup she's actually made and given to someone else) and keeping a careful watch over her. She cares deeply for others, but sometimes has difficulty expressing those emotions. Mostly she tries to keep her distant from people, but unfortunately finds it difficult to hide just how deep she cares, and does everything she can to help those in need. This shows itself most clearly in just how deeply she connects with Ouse, the main antagonist, being able to understand her pain more than anyone. Ouse herself says that she and Yuri are alike, and it's Yuri's empathy and understanding that saves Ouse in the end. In a way, Yuri can be described as a little self-sacrificing when it comes to helping others, since she repeatedly puts her life at risk for others, and in the Bad Ending even kills herself to be with Ouse forever and ease her pain at being a Pillar to hold back the curse.

Yuri also has difficulty showing many emotions, rarely smiling and her laughter muted. She also can't cry-- A part of the story of Maiden of Black Water is Yuri learning how to cry again and show emotion more freely, though she doesn't learn this lesson until the very end.
Suitability: Yuri can't say no to someone in need

Powers/Abilities: Sixth Sense/the ability to see and speak to spirits and sense their presence.

Kagemi: Shadow Reading. The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Yuri could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Yuri to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: "The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead."

She's also shown to be very capable using mitori or "Glancing"-- An ability that allows the user to see what people think, their memories, feelings and secrets, amongst other things. When Yuri touches a spirit, a dead body, or a person near-death, she can see a vision of their last moments and memories. She's also shown using a similar ability to see the memories and thoughts of people still alive, as indicated when she touches Miu and Ren and sees their dreams and memories then. It seems implied through that that sometimes touching a sleeping person will let her see their dreams.
Entity Affinity: Probably the Eye. While Yuri's abilities deal mostly with death and the concept of dying/not dying alone, a big portion of it is also about knowing. Using mitori allows yuri to know someone inside and out--their sins, their secrets, their thoughts and feelings. By using mitori on a living person, she forces them to also relive their worst memories, with the added knowledge that Yuri's seen it to.

While it operates on the idea of 'sharing pain,' it also makes for one freaked out or upset person. Historically, one of the ends to the shrine maidens who used this ability was someone freaking out about his secrets being known, so he killed the women and butchered their eyes.

Inventory: - Yuri's Notebook

- Yuri's diary

- Hisoka's charm

Samples: https://redstringtheories.dreamwidth.org/1996.html?thread=818636#cmt818636

https://haddonfields.dreamwidth.org/697.html?thread=9913#cmt9913

Let me know if those work!

comments

CHARACTER: Yuri Kozukata
CANON: Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water
GOD: Ixtab, Goddess of Suicide
MYTHOLOGY: Mayan
POWER: Fear Manipulation
FOLLOWERS: 100
SHINKI: 1
TEMPLE: There's a feeling of unease that seems to permeate the entire dwelling, nestled back in a forest. There's a winding path lined with ancient lanterns and the closer one gets to the front of the home, the more strange things seem to appear in the trees-- namely rope, long strings of it draped over tree limbs, some twisted into a single noose.

Creepy.

The front of the home doesn't look much better-- it's two stories, and the outside makes it look abandoned, with broken steps and twisted handrails that lead up to the door, but thankfully the inside doesn't match. The inside is wide and open and surprisingly welcoming, with a permeating smell of coffee. The front area where meetings actually take place is rather muted, but there's always a fire going and coffee or tea on the table to be more welcoming. Moving past the front area reveals the home wraps around a large, opened area of water used for bathing or purifying. There are plenty of bedrooms and modern amenities designed with comfort in mind... if you can get through the spooky forest and all first. Appearances can be deceiving, right?

~ ~ ~ ~

comments

Hikami area. Supposedly it's set around the Hida-Takayama area.

Personality: Calm, serious, and aloof.

She didn't know, and still doesn't, how to connect with people.

Personal Moral Codes: Yuri can't resist helping someone in need, and is especially drawn to 'outcast' types. People who are different and are very lonely pull at her heart, and she can't leave them alone. While she doesn't condone killing, she's also accepting of things like suicide and death, and likely finds the idea of 'double suicides' and the ghost marriages romantic and 'good' things, because the person isn't alone anymore.
Insecurities/Personal Demons: Yuri is very insecure about her abilities and the acknowledgement that it makes her 'different.' She's extremely lonely and rather obsessed with the idea that 'everyone dies alone'; because of this, she's drawn towards the promises of not dying alone. She worries about the people close to her and will go to great lengths to help and protect them--like going up on a haunted mountain to battle ghosts for them--but she also doesn't see herself as truly worthy of their loyalty in return.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses: Sixth Sense/the ability to see and speak to spirits and sense their presence.

Kagemi: Shadow Reading The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.

Glancing/Mitori: An ability that allows the user to see what people think, their memories, feelings and secrets, amongst other things. When Yuri touches a spirit, or a person near-death, she can see a vision of their last moments and memories. She's also shown using a similar ability to see the memories and thoughts of people still alive, as indicated when she touches Miu and Ren and sees their dreams and memories then. It seems implied through that that sometimes touching a sleeping person will let her see their dreams. Historically, the ability was used by the Maidens of Black Water. When people came to the mountain seeking death, the maidens would witness their last moments/suicides and take on the burden of their sins and secrets.

Ability/Power/Magic Warping: N/A i think?

Inventory: -- Her diary
- Camera Obscura (Type 07 - infinity
Type 14 x75
Type 61 x36
Type 90 x24

(to note, the camera comes with Type 07 that never runs out, it's the weakest of the exorcism film types and takes longer to load, but it seems built into the camera to allow pictures))

- Hisoka's charm

- Books: The Immortal Flower
-The Art of Shadow Reading
- The Taboo of Glancing
Writing Samples: One

Sample 2 (FTR this is an ambiguous scenario of Yuri investigating something with people she's gotten close to):

Breath in.

Breath out.

She counts each one, reminding herself to take the next one and then the next. Overkill, maybe, but a necessary one, she thinks. The place is unnatural. Everything about it brushes just wrong against her psyche, making her bristle and feel... Off. She shivers and rubs at her arms, as if somehow the contact will rub away the 'off' feelings, but it does little to help.

There was something here, threatening and hovering. Her gaze falls on the little group she's found herself with, eyes briefly analyzing everyone's faces. Everyone wears the same sort of expression of grim determination; there's no need for Yuri to try and use her abilities to be able to tell that much. Everyone was here working towards the same goal, so... If she voiced what was bothering her, would it help or hinder them? Just give them something else to worry about? And what if it turned out to be nothing anyhow?

She chews on her bottom lip a moment.

Breath in.

Breath out.

No. It'd be better to work it out herself for right now. She had to do her best to protect everyone and help them out and giving them something along the lines of 'I just have a bad feeling' when she was certain everyone had a 'bad feeling' about this place would do nothing. She just...

She just had to do her best. Work harder. She could do this. She could be someone they didn't look to as a burden, right?

Right.

Another breath.

"Are we ready to go...?"

OUT OF CHARACTER

Player Name: Kalyn
Player Age: 27
Player Contact: Plurk: ovals

Other Characters In Game: N/A
In-Game Tag If Accepted: Yuri Kozukata: Kalyn
Permissions for Character: Permissions!

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Go all out with it tbh

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: Perceptions being messed up, when the person's being slowly corrupted into something evil/slipping to the ~dark side~
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Graphic depictions of gore are really it, or any realistic images of violence/gore against eyes, fingers, or feet. I can deal with written descriptions of eye/finger/feet injuries but images would be a Hard No without warning.
Additional Information:

comments

The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Yuri could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Yuri to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.

She's also shown to be very capable using mitori or "Glancing"-- An ability that allows the user to see what people think, their memories, feelings and secrets, amongst other things, at, well, a glance!

Augment Skillset: Communications! Because how else to better utilize her ability to feel others' emotions and stuff.
Sample: a log thread from the other game I have her in. Well it was her first log so if you need anything more recent let me know!

comments

ABILITY PERMISSIONS- Far Shore

Kagemi: Shadow Reading. The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Yuri could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Yuri to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.

Mitori: Glancing (mitori) in Fatal Frame V is the ability to touch a spirit at the moment of defeat and witness a vision of its last moments. Yuri Kozukata, Miu Hinasaki and Ren Hojo all make use of this ability to learn more about Mount Hikami and the people who died there.

Historically, the ability was used by the Maidens of Black Water. When people came to the mountain seeking death, the maidens would witness their last moments and take on the burden of their sins and secrets. Those with the strongest power would be able to take in a person's memories simply by looking at them, and the maidens' penetrating gazes became an ominous theme in folklore about the mountain. Eventually, the shrine maiden's heart became too full to continue performing this duty, at which point she would be enclosed in a reliquary and submerged.

Essentially this means if Yuri touches someone, she has a chance of seeing their thoughts or memories, etc etc. Like reading their mind. She can also pick up on someone's emotions and a general idea of their thoughts!

I don't plan on using the more extreme versions of this (like memory/dream/secret seeing or essentially those mind-reading portions of it) too much, at least in the beginning of any CR, because Yuri tends to be careful about touching people and has a decent amount of control over it. However she may still pick up base emotions/feelings/thoughts on a touch

For the bigger things, unless you approach me about the possibility first (and I'm always up for traumatizing Yuri or making things awkward of the "oops I totally just saw that time you died or stabbed someone and boy does that look bad out of context!" variety), there's an event that might destabilizes Yuri's power, or something similar, I won't be making use of that part of her ability! That's stuff that has to be plotted out beforehand and I won't do it without permission.

So basically, please comment here if it is or is not okay for Yuri to pick up on your characters emotions or thoughts, and to what extent it is/isn't okay! It's perfectly possible to avoid it completely, so no worries there!

Edit to Add: I'm 100% okay with spoilers, so no worries about spoiling me for anything!

comments

She didn't know, and still doesn't, how to connect with people.

Abilities: Sixth Sense/the ability to see and speak to spirits and sense their presence.

Kagemi: Shadow Reading (影見, kagemi) is a term used in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. It is the ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. Some special items, known as yosuga or Tokens, are imbued with particularly strong residual memories and emotions, and create a much clearer impression for the practitioner to follow. The Camera Obscura may be used to aid the process, since it captures things hidden by ghostly powers, but carries a risk of drawing the seeker closer to the spirit world themselves.

Shadow Reading has been passed down since the olden days around Mount Hikami, where it was performed as a kind of fortune-telling. In the game, all the playable characters have this ability to some extent. Hisoka Kurosawa learned it from an old woman of her acquaintance, and uses it to find lost items for clients, or to bring missing people back from the spirit world. She is training Yuri Kozukata in its use as well.

She's also shown to be very capable using mitori Glancing (mitori) in Fatal Frame V is the ability to touch a spirit at the moment of defeat and witness a vision of its last moments.

She's also shown using mitori to see the memories and thoughts of people still alive, as indicated when she touches Miu and Ren and sees their dreams and memories. It seems implied through that that sometimes touching a sleeping person will let her see their dreams.

Alignment: Daimonia, probably. It seems like the best fit, with the 'grief' part. While Yuri stays fairly muted in her emotional reactions to things, she does grieve a little for every life lost on the mountain; especially Ouse, with whom Yuri empathizes and sympathizes with the most, who is grieving the loss of her life and the lost love she had.

Other:

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample:A thread on the TDM!

Questions:

comments

Permissions - Yuri's Mitori Ability

_____________

Essentially this means if Yuri touches someone, she has a chance of seeing their thoughts or memories, etc etc. Like reading their mind. She can also pick up on someone's emotions and a general idea of their thoughts! The power is shown in canon being used not just on spirits, but on living people as well (Yuri taps into Miu's memories and vice-versa) and on dreams (Yuri sees one of Ren's dreams when she touches him while he's sleeping).

Edit to Add: I'm 100% okay with spoilers, so no worries about spoiling me for anything!

comments

Permissions + Opt-Out

CHARACTER NAME: Yuri Kozukata
CHARACTER SERIES: Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water

[OOC]
Backtagging: Yep! I will drop threads if they seem to be over, but if I don't respond back for a few days and you have ideas for the thread/want it to continue, just drop me a line and I'll be glad to pick it back up.
Threadhopping: Ask first, but generally I'm okay with it.
Fourthwalling: Go for it!
Offensive subjects: It's pretty hard to offend me. Don't purposefully be an asshole and we'll be fine.

For Kink Here is a kink list! This is NOT an IC kink list, this is what I as a player am or am not willing to play. Yuri herself will play whatever I can get her into if I can figure out a reason (and "fuck it I wanna play it so I will" is a good enough reason 90% of the time).

[IC]
Hugging this character: You can try! She'll be startled, and might push your character away, but pls give this child hugs. She needs them.
Kissing this character: Again, you can try, but she'll definitely shove your character away if it comes without warning.
Flirting with this character: I encourage it, though Yuri will probably outright ignore these attempts... Good luck and godspeed.
Fighting with this character: Yuri will probably try to run before things get physical, but I don't foresee her getting into any physical confrontations with anyone anytime. She'll fight with her camera if it's a ghost and all, but a fist-fight? She'll probably be knocked flat in seconds.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Go for it tbh just message me so we can hash something out.
Killing this character: Again, just message me! Most likely I'll be okay with it.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: ONCE AGAIN just let me know! I'm okay with it, but drop me a line so I can tell you what your character might find/figure out/etc.

( WARNINGS AND OPT-OUT INFORMATION UNDER THE CUT. Warning for mention of suicide )

comments
