Character Details
Canon Point: Final Chapter: Bride of Black Water, before confronting Ouse
Species: Human
Timeline of Important Events in Canon History:
  • - An undetermined amount of time before the start of the game, there was an accident (implied to be traffic related) that took Yuri's family, leaving her alone and wth the ability to see spirits
  • - Very shortly before the start of the game, Yuri stops going to school and disappears. Someone contacts Hisoka to ask for her to track down Yuri.
  • - Hisoka finds Yuri on the ledge of a cliff, ready to jump, but saves her. She tells Yuri she's not alone and to keep living a little while longer. Yuri ends up moving in and living with Hisoka, working at her cafe/shop, and learning about her powers.
  • - Yuri takes up her first assignment which ends in simultaneous success and failure, as she completes her objective to find a lost item, but is attacked by spirits attracted to her power. Hisoka regrets bringing Yuri and apologizes to her.
  • - A couple days later, Hisoka goes on an assignment without telling Yuri the details and goes missing. Yuri continues to watch the shop hoping shell return. The client that hired Hisoka, Fuyuhi, stops by and gives Yuri a clue, then goes up on the mountain to find her friend herself. Yuri goes after her to stop her, as the mountain is too dangerous.
  • - She tries to rescue Fuyuhi, but fails as Fuyuhi falls victim to the spirits on the mountain and kills herself. Yuri escapes, then returns the next day to try and find the girl Fuyuhi and hisoka were looking for, in the hopes it would lead her to Hisoka.
  • - Yuri rescues Haruka and brings her back to the shop. That night, Fuyuhi's ghost appears and leads Haruka back to the mountain, where she dies. Yuri continues to search for clues for Hisoka.
  • - Yuri finds and rescues Miu on the mountain, bringing her back safely to the shop. Yuri ttempts to use her abilities on Miu to find out more about her, but Miu turns the ability around on Yuri.
  • - Yuri is lured away onto the mountain, but Miu finds and rescues her. The to begin to talk more and slowly form a friendship with each other, recognizes that they're very similar.
  • - Shortly after, Yuri manages to find her way to the deepest part of the shrine on the mountain and finds Hisoka at last. Though Hisoka tries to convince Yuri to leave her there, Yuri refuses and echos the words that Hisoka told her before, that they should live for a while longer. Hisoka agrees, and the two return home together.
  • - Despite this, something still calls to Yuri from the mountain and she returns to it to settle things once and for all.
Personality: In your character's canon, what motivates or drives them to make the decisions and choices they make?

Helping others, first and foremost. Yuri's at first ready to patiently await Hisoka's return, even after it's been a few days. Having just failed her first, easy, assignment with Hisoka, she's reluctant to do anything on her own. She's spurred to action by Fuyuhi's arrival and subsequent plan to go up onto the dangerous mountain alone. Unable to ignore something right in front of her, Yuri goes up onto the mountain to find her and finds clues that tell her that Hisoka's been spirited away by a spirit on the mountain. From there, everything is about a mix of atonement (after Fuyuhi kills herself, Yuri tries to find Haruka, and after that fails, tries to find Miu, trying to save someone) and trying to save the person who gave her so much and also saved her life. Yuri is mostly driven by her desire to help people, and her inability to refuse someone help. If someone's in need, Yuri can't help but involve herself to aide them.

    --

Calm, serious, and aloof. Not much is known about Yuri prior to the accident that took her family's lives, but the Yuri that came out of the wreckage was clearly changed by the trauma. The ability to see "impossible" things created a scar on her personality that even at the end of the game she has difficulty overcoming. Her experience left her shaken and feeling isolated, unable to reach out for help-- when she did, she got told she was merely 'sick' and the doctors attempted to help her, to no avail. Yuri holds a sense of bitterness for this, as indicated by her commentary when finding one of her notebooks, where she remarks the doctors said it would help to write everything down, but she concludes that they never cared about her anyway, as no one ever bothered to read what she wrote.

Because of these incidents, Yuri grew to see herself as someone apart from everyone else. She didn't know, and still doesn't, how to connect with people. How could she when she could see and hear all these horrible things that no one else could? She was lonely and growing worse as spirits swarmed her, trying to get her attention. Growing more and more depressed, Yuri became obsessed with death and the idea that she and everyone else would eventually die alone; this led to her trying to commit suicide until Hisoka caught her at the last moment and pleaded with her to keep living a little while longer.

Despite this, Yuri isn't quite suicidal-- she's obsessed with death still and the idea of dying alone, but she promised Hisoka that she would live for "a little while," and plans to hold onto that promise. This shows how much Yuri values keeping promises and the loyalty and admiration she has for Hisoka. It shows up again when Hisoka disappears and Yuri works tirelessly to try and get her back. Yuri is very loyal to those who manage to claim it and will do everything in her power to help her friends. Death calls to her, and she feels the pull of it often, but she isn't one to throw her life away needlessly. She tries to commit suicide under the pull of it twice throughout the series-- once in a flashback showing when she's about to jump off the cliff, and again when she tries to wade into the Black Lake to drown herself (and again in the "Bad End" when she jumps from the cliff with Ouse).

She's also incapable of not helping someone in need. Despite her reservations, she still opens up the shop when Hisoka's gone, despite never actually serving customers before and feeling uncomfortable at the prospect. When Fuyuhi comes by looking for Hisoka, Yuri is at first content to simply wait for Hisoka to (hopefully) return after she goes missing, but Fuyuhi's insistence that she go on her own to find her missing friend spurs Yuri to action. She can't let Fuyuhi go onto the mountain alone, not with how dangerous it is, so she bravely picks up and goes after her, using her powers to help.

While still uncomfortable with dealing with people and her powers out of the fear of accidentally seeing into peoples' souls, Yuri does her best and will use her powers as needed. While she doesn't normally talk about them, Hisoka openly advertises her powers to find lost people and items, and Yuri gradually begins to adopt a similar attitude, getting over her reluctance to use her power when it comes to helping others.

When it comes to people who've been through traumas, whether similar or different than her own, Yuri is quick to offer comfort no matter how awkward she feels attempting. She doesn't have Hisoka's easy grace or showmanship, but she tries her best. She comforts Haruka after finding her on the mountain and offers her a place to sleep, determined to keep a watchful eye over the girl and help her. When she saves Hisoka, she recreates the scene of when Hisoka saved her, giving her coffee (presumably the first cup she's actually made and given to someone else) and keeping a careful watch over her. She cares deeply for others, but sometimes has difficulty expressing those emotions. Mostly she tries to keep her distant from people, but unfortunately finds it difficult to hide just how deep she cares, and does everything she can to help those in need. This shows itself most clearly in just how deeply she connects with Ouse, the main antagonist, being able to understand her pain more than anyone. Ouse herself says that she and Yuri are alike, and it's Yuri's empathy and understanding that saves Ouse in the end. In a way, Yuri can be described as a little self-sacrificing when it comes to helping others, since she repeatedly puts her life at risk for others, and in the Bad Ending even kills herself to be with Ouse forever and ease her pain at being a Pillar to hold back the curse.

Yuri also has difficulty showing many emotions, rarely smiling and her laughter muted. She also can't cry-- A part of the story of Maiden of Black Water is Yuri learning how to cry again and show emotion more freely, though she doesn't learn this lesson until the very end.
Abilities, Magic and Supernatural Skills/Afflictions: Sixth Sense/the ability to see and speak to spirits and sense their presence.

Kagemi: Shadow Reading. The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Yuri could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Yuri to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.

She's also shown to be very capable using mitori or "Glancing"-- An ability that allows the user to see what people think, their memories, feelings and secrets, amongst other things, at, well, a glance! When Yuri touches a spirit, or a person near-death, she can see a vision of their last moments and memories. She's also shown using a similar ability to see the memories and thoughts of people still alive, as indicated when she touches Miu and Ren and sees their dreams and memories then. It seems implied through that that sometimes touching a sleeping person will let her see their dreams. Historically, the ability was used by the Maidens of Black Water. When people came to the mountain seeking death, the maidens would witness their last moments/suicides and take on the burden of their sins and secrets.

Being drenched in water helps to strengthen these abilities and will also draw spirits and supernatural beings to Yuri easier.

    Dragon & Magical Element
    Elemental Alignment:
Water - Yuri has a deep connection with water, especially when considering her canon. Water is part of the religion of the mountain, considered a sacred thing; while Yuri doesn't practice the religion, as its fallen out of practice and all, water and Yuri's connection to it still plays an important role through the game. There's actually an entire system based on whether Yuri's soaked or not.
Shadow - Yuri's someone walking a line between living and dying, someone with a morbid fascination with death and the darker side of things. She's drawn to it with a terrible curiosity and is tempted often to "fall through the darkness" with Ouse. Hisoka too makes a mention that touching Yuri and trying to read her is like "peering into darkness."
Earth - This choice is based more on the fact that Yuri is a very calm, level-headed girl who, despite the fantastical things that happen to her, tries to stay as grounded (haha) as possible. While not a natural leader, she definitely tries to have a handle of the situation and tries not to be reckless (unless someone's well-being is on the line)

    Dragon: Adult Size: Giant
Body Type: Long and snake-like, all sleek and easy to wind herself up in knots if she's not careful.
    Number of Legs: 4
    Number of Wings: None
General idea of appearance/Hide/skin description: She resembles the Japanese dragons of lore in Yuri's home, featuring glittery scales that have an ombre effect, starting at a light blue and turning to an orange-y gold. She's smooth to the touch and her scales tend to shed individually as they grow. She starts out as all bright blue, the ombre effect slowly coming in as she grows.
Capable of flight or flightless: Can glide for a short period of time--around 10 minutes--and not much higher than tree level.
Capable of being ridden by the character or incapable: Capable.
    Diet: Seafood and plants
Dragon Egg: Hard-shelled and looks scale-y, with a color pattern that matches her adult form.
Personality traits inherited from Character Bond: Determined, loyal, insatiably curious, prone to fits of melancholy. Also rather clingy, in that Yuri's fear of being alone will manifest itself in that; Kiyohime has separation anxiety and dislikes being away from Yuri or others for any length of time longer than 20 minutes.

    Writing Samples
    First Sample: http://dragoneit.dreamwidth.org/1498.html?thread=639450#cmt639450
Second Sample: Yuri had thought--had hoped--that the strangest thing she'd have to deal with in life would be spirits. The City of Nuren had very quickly blown that hope out of the water, from the animal-like citizens and the talk of monsters outside the walls and, you know. Dragons.

Dragons. She knew of dragons, of course, they were in all the myths and legends back home, playing a huge part in the mythology, but here it was real. More than real. Others in her same situation were wandering around with tiny dragons into their arms now, and she watched them with a mix of envy and apprehension. After all, wouldn't that be her some day? But she'd never really had a pet before, and didn't know if she could trust herself to take care of something like that. They were intelligent enough, weren't they? What if she messed up raising it and it turned into some horrible monster or something?

She'd come to think that maybe she'd never get a dragon, and had resigned herself to that, ready to let herself fade to obscurity. Something quiet would be a nice change.

But, there it was. The egg sat there with a distinct feeling like it was waiting for her, and she examined it with a silent, critical air. If she took that final step-- it feels, a little, like standing on that cliff again. One step would change everything, wouldn't it? She takes a deep breath. Now or never. If she didn't... If she didn't, who knows what would happen? Yuri certainly would never know, and the curiosity of it would eat her alive. And what would happen to the dragon in the egg if she didn't? Slowly she reaches out and touches the egg, feeling the pulse of life beneath its shell, and jumps back in surprise as it immediately cracks and breaks, the dragon within eager to get out. Startled, Yuri cups her arms as the dragon stumbles full-speed on clumsy legs into her, and she steps back, struggling to hold the squirming thing. Her mind is assaulted with impressions that she can't tell if are from their bond or her own abilities-- safety, warmth, not alone.

Ah. That's what it's about, isn't it? Yuri looks down as the tiny dragon settles, huddling against her for warmth. How long had she been alone in that egg for? How long had she been waiting for someone--for Yuri--to come along? It doesn't take Yuri long to realize she's already in deep here, and she sighs in a sort of fond resignation. "Alright, alright... Don't worry, I'm here now." She murmurs to the dragon, petting her absently. "You don't have to worry about being alone again."

    30 Day Opt-In

In the 30 days that your character has been in the city, how have they spent their time? Yuri lived a quiet existence at first, spending some time coming to terms with the supposed fate of her world. But with Hisoka's words echoing in her head to not give up, Yuri's semi-reluctantly started offering her kagemi abilities (that is, her ability to track down lost items and people) to the citizens in an effort to be useful and take her mind off things. She'll take any job, from finding misplaced keys to tracing down lost children. She doesn't openly advertise this service though,p referring word of mouth from satisfied clients so she doesn't get swamped with requests.

Has the dragon hatched yet? Did their egg hatch immediately or was there time between locating their egg in the Heart of Nuren and the dragon's hatchday? How much have they grown? It took two weeks for Kiyohime to hatch from her egg, with Yuri anxious about doing something wrong the entire time. She grows slowly, however, and is about the size of a house cat right now.

How have your character's interactions with the Remnants within the city been? Like with most people, Yuri doesn't go out of her way to interact with anyone, but she's respectful and polite. She offers her services to find lost things/people to them easily.

How have your character's interactions with the Touched within the city been? She was frightened of them at first, being rigidly polite out of caution. As time passed her curiosity has grown and she's taken to cautiously asking questions about them, trying to figure out what's polite to ask and what's considered rude; she's more comfortable with those who don't share major physical similarities to the beasts they share blood with, but she's not going to be rude to say, Keep either. She's also more comfortable depending on the beasts' themselves (ie a cat-like Touched as opposed to a Bear). But in general she tries not to treat them much differently than the Remnants. She also offers her services at location things/people to them.

Has your character been living in the mountain cavern homes of Upper Nuren or within the housing areas of Lower Nuren? Within the housing areas. She doesn't want or ask for much, she's probably taken up residence in some one-bedroom apartment style of residence.
